Project Background & Scope
This 45,000 sq.m multi-level retail destination in Doha features expansive glass atriums, dense retail corridors, and high-occupancy food courts. The facility requires massive and continuous cooling capabilities to combat Qatar's extreme summer ambient temperatures, which frequently exceed 45°C.
The central HVAC strategy relied on a robust chilled water system. The goal was to establish a centralized plant room capable of supplying chilled water to dozens of Air Handling Units (AHUs) and Variable Air Volume (VAV) terminals distributed throughout the commercial space, ensuring strict temperature stability.
Engineering Bottlenecks
- High Thermal Load: Massive solar gain through the central atrium glass dome requires rapid capacity adjustments during peak daytime hours.
- Energy Consumption: Running continuous large-scale compressors poses a significant challenge to the facility's overall energy budget and electrical grid load.
Implemented Solutions
- Variable Speed Centrifugal Chillers: Deployed high-efficiency water-cooled chillers with Variable Speed Drives (VSD) to precisely match partial load conditions.
- BMS Integration: Full integration with the central Building Management System for automated chilled water temperature resets and sequential equipment staging.
